Enno Poppe’s Speicher project, begun in 2008, had its world premiere at Donaueschinger Musiktage (Germany) on October 19th 2013. About Speicher Poppe says: “The composition consists of six parts, and each of these six parts consists of six parts as well. All of these parts are in the same ratio in terms of their length and proportions. This might sound academic, but to me it was an interesting process to observe. I experienced how these various repetitions and changes, these various conditions and formal constellations evoke quite distinct forms of perception.”
In 1810 Giacomo Meyerbeer became a pupil of Georg Joseph Vogler (1749–1814), a music theorist known as “Abbé Vogler,” at Vogler’s music school. Eighteen years old at the time, Meyerbeer, already well versed and full of artistic self-confidence, resolved to set the oratorio text Gott und die Natur (God and Nature) of the Heidelberg poet and professor of aesthetics, Aloys Wilhelm Schreiber (1761–1841), to music.
It took Meyerbeer less than six weeks (15 March–22 April 1811) to finish the work. Around two weeks later, on 8 May 1811, the first performance of the work took place at the Königliches Nationaltheater in Berlin.
Meyerbeer was most pleased with the Berlin performance, which inspired him to compose his first opera that same year, Jephtas Gelübde, again to a libretto by Aloys Schreiber. The opera was first performed in Munich on 23 February 1812.
